Amy and Steve wait outside The Brass Monkey before the village quiz. Rosie arrives from The Pig with an overnight bag and explains that Eddie Flood is there, making the hotel unsafe. As they talk, Amy reflects that she has missed Steve’s ordinary conversation, even while Rosie reminds her that Vasiliy Karpin may still be a threat too.

Henk joins them, and Steve finally leads the group inside. The pub is crowded for quiz night, and Steve heads toward his usual teammates, John and Jyoti, plus his substitute teammate, Martin from Lymington. When Martin turns around, Amy realizes that Martin is actually Jeff Nolan, alive despite the earlier evidence suggesting he had been killed.

Steve reveals that he worked out Jeff was alive because only Jeff could have planted the information about Courtney Lewis during a Brass Monkey lock-in. Jeff confirms that he needed people to think he was dead because François Loubet was trying to kill him. Jeff explains that he staged the scene by storing his own blood, shooting up his BMW, and tipping it over, then hid in Steve’s spare room until the arrival of an unidentified man and woman forced him to leave and sleep elsewhere.

Amy presses Jeff for answers about why he is in Axley and who is targeting whom. Jeff says Loubet is also trying to kill Amy, with help from Joe Blow. When Amy asks who Joe Blow is, Jeff identifies Henk, directly contradicting Henk’s earlier claims that Jeff was the one working with Loubet. This accusation sharply shifts suspicion and sets up an open confrontation between the two men.

As the quiz begins, Henk demands an immediate explanation, but Steve refuses to postpone the pub quiz any longer after days of danger and disruption. Jeff and Henk immediately clash over the answer to the first question, each insisting he is right, while Amy cuts through the standoff by taking the pen and writing her own answer. The chapter ends with Jeff’s survival exposed, Henk newly accused, and the group still waiting to sort out the truth.
