Eddie Flood realizes Rosie’s television appeal has destroyed his anonymity. When Eddie calls Rob after sending him the footage, Eddie describes being recognized and followed all morning, with strangers repeatedly photographing him and tracking his movements in hopes of claiming Rosie’s reward.

During the call, Rob learns that Eddie took a shot at Amy Wheeler the previous morning and failed to kill her. Rob reacts with disbelief and immediately removes Eddie from the job, telling Eddie to keep the fifteen thousand pounds only because they are friends. Rob also admits the pressure on him has become severe, saying that if Amy Wheeler does not die, Rob will be killed.

After the call, Eddie thinks about what he has gained despite losing the contract. Eddie still has the money, no longer has to answer to Rob about the hit, and now wants to work out who Rob is really serving because that information could help Eddie later. For the moment, Eddie decides he must stay close to Amy Wheeler’s movements, because whatever Amy Wheeler does next will guide Eddie’s own next move.

The chapter then reveals that Eddie did not truly miss by accident. Eddie had a clear shot at Amy Wheeler in the Mercedes and another clear shot at the taxi, but deliberately fired in a way that kept Amy Wheeler alive and made sure he was noticed. Seeing news coverage that labels him a “mystery hero,” Eddie concludes that his plan has worked and decides to use the time he has bought himself to finish a separate, carefully prepared objective.
