Chapter 38
Overview
Eddie Flood escapes a potentially dangerous delay at immigration thanks to Carlos, a corrupt but helpful airport official. More importantly, Eddie learns that Rosie D’Antonio and Amy Wheeler are flying to Hawaii and quickly arranges to follow them. The chapter shifts the pursuit forward by putting Eddie back on their trail before they realize they are being hunted.
Summary
Eddie Flood is finally released from immigration after Carlos, an airport official, apologetically explains that a computer flag kept Eddie detained longer than expected. Carlos hints that Eddie’s past arrests caused the problem, but also makes clear that he used some unofficial influence to get Eddie through the system.
As Eddie leaves, Carlos remembers that Eddie had asked about Rosie D’Antonio and decides to offer more help. He points out Rosie’s Gulfstream on the runway and, after some prompting and an implied payoff, confirms that Rosie is on board with another woman. Carlos also reveals that the plane is bound for Hawaii.
This information immediately changes Eddie’s next move. Realizing Rosie and Amy Wheeler are already in the air, Eddie asks whether he can hire another plane to follow them. Carlos agrees to take Eddie to the charter desk, and Eddie decides to reward him generously. The chapter ends with Eddie setting off for Hawaii, confident Rosie and Amy have no idea he is tracking them and expecting Rob Kenna to be pleased.
