Eddie Flood prepares to leave his private plane in St Lucia, reflecting that the island looks beautiful in the same misleading way Hawaii did before things went wrong there. On the long journey from Hawaii, lengthened by his poor grasp of geography, Eddie has had time to work on his laptop, researching bribes and police corruption. That extra time helps his broader plans, but it also means Amy Wheeler and Rosie D’Antonio have had nearly twenty hours’ head start.

Eddie recognizes the danger of that delay. Rob Kenna has already given him another chance, and Eddie knows that if he fails to kill Amy this time, Rob may decide he is expendable. With that pressure hanging over him, Eddie gets off the plane, meets a driver named Ferdy, and plans to collect a gun before finding Amy, assuming she is still travelling with Rosie.

Before they leave, Eddie receives a message from Rob saying Amy has been found at the Emerald Bay Resort and that, if Eddie loses her, she will probably head to Dublin next. Eddie tells Ferdy to drive him to Emerald Bay, but the conversation immediately becomes suspicious. When Eddie mentions Rosie, Ferdy says he recently drove her from the resort back to the airport and that she is now flying to Fiji to research a book.

The contradiction makes Eddie stop the trip and ask to return to the terminal so he can think. Checking recent private-jet departures on his phone, Eddie sees that no flight has gone to Fiji. Instead, among the latest departures he finds a jet that left for Dublin just forty-five minutes earlier. From that, Eddie realizes Ferdy has tried to send him in the wrong direction and concludes that Amy and Rosie have likely escaped toward Dublin, leaving Eddie to resume the chase with a clearer lead.
