As Steve studies Jeff Nolan's BMW, riddled with bullet holes and covered in blood, Amy finally calls. Steve tells Amy that Jeff came to see him, then directed Steve to Hollands Wood campsite, where Steve found the car with no body in sight. Because there is only blood and no corpse, Amy immediately argues that Jeff may still be alive, though she accepts that he is clearly in serious danger.

Amy then reveals that she and Rosie D'Antonio are no longer on the private island and are travelling by car. Steve realizes Rosie is with Amy from the voice in the background. When Steve asks what is happening, Amy refuses to explain fully over the phone and instead presses him to come to America, while Steve says he has just found the apparent aftermath of a murder and plans to leave after making an anonymous report.

Steve resists Amy's request because he dislikes the idea of travelling to America and believes he may be more useful in England, where he thinks he has a lead connected to Andrew Fairbanks. Amy cuts through that objection by saying the situation is bigger than Fairbanks alone: multiple people have now been murdered, and she is not safe. She tells Steve that someone has already tried to kill her, including an ex-Navy SEAL and possibly a local police officer, so she needs someone she can trust.

Even after Steve suggests Amy should call on other professionals, Amy keeps pressing him and removes his practical excuses one by one. Rosie can provide a private jet from Farnborough, and Margaret can look after Trouble. When Amy asks what Debbie would tell him to do, Steve knows the answer and feels both dread and a surprising sense of excitement at being needed.

By the end of the call, Steve is effectively won over. He asks one last anxious question about whether there are alligators, hears that there are, and still does not pull back. When Steve protests that he and Amy do not solve murders, Amy answers that they will have to start, marking Steve's decision to join her.
