As the group considers Steve’s discovery that so many threads lead back to Max Highfield, Felicity immediately rejects the idea that Max could be responsible. Before that argument can go further, someone knocks at the door. Expecting danger, Amy, Jeff and Henk all draw guns, and Amy even throws Steve a spare weapon so he can answer the door.

At the front door, Steve finds two Hampshire Police officers looking for Amy Wheeler. Realizing Amy needs time to get out of sight, Steve tells the officers that Amy has already gone back to London. When the officers ask to come in and check, Steve lets them enter only after delaying them long enough for the others to rearrange the scene.

By the time the police reach the living room, the atmosphere has been transformed. Jeff and Henk are calmly playing chess, Rosie and Tony are watching television, Felicity is circulating with biscuits, and Amy has vanished completely. The officers announce that they have a warrant for Amy’s arrest for murder, making it clear that the threat around Amy has expanded from private attacks to an official criminal investigation.

The group keeps up the performance and insists Amy left hours earlier. Rosie responds with jokes, Jeff is deliberately obstructive, and even Henk treats the encounter lightly, but the detectives do not lose focus. The younger officer recognizes Rosie, and the older detective warns everyone not to leave the country because the police are investigating three murders, ending the chapter with Amy hidden, the others under scrutiny, and the pressure on the whole group sharply increased.
