Chapter 69
Overview
Bonnie eagerly prepares for the influencer trip that she believes will bring money, confidence, and new possibilities for her family. As she packs with Lois and the children, Bonnie reveals that part of the job involves carrying a locked case for an on-camera unboxing, which she accepts without suspicion. The chapter matters because it shows Bonnie’s trust in Felicity and how innocently she is stepping into a larger scheme.
Summary
Bonnie Gregor packs for the influencer trip she believes will change her life, while her mother Lois supervises and her children Mimi and Maxie play around her. Because Bonnie has been studying influencers online, she chooses bikinis as well as ordinary clothes, evening jumpers, a smart dress, and many pairs of shoes. She worries about space, but keeps adding items because she wants to look fully prepared for the job.
As they pack, Lois urges Bonnie to rehearse, but Bonnie explains that she has not been given any lines and will probably have to improvise. The conversation shows how excited both women are: Lois fusses over clothes, ironing, and the missing hotel details, while Bonnie imagines what the hotel might be like and wishes she knew more about where she is going. Bonnie is pleased to see her mother so happy and thinks about what her own children might grow up to do.
Lois talks about how she will look after Mimi and Maxie while Bonnie is away, including visits to Graham and activities to keep them busy. Feeling hopeful about the money, Bonnie says they can all take a holiday together when she gets back, something she has never been able to promise before. Lois tells Bonnie to spend the money on herself and the children, which reinforces how significant Bonnie thinks this opportunity is for the family.
When Lois suggests taking a second suitcase, Bonnie reveals that she is already taking another case as part of the job. She explains that it will contain a new organic paint product for an on-camera “unboxing,” and that she will receive the lock combination while filming so her reaction looks genuine. Lois jokes about customs asking whether Bonnie packed the bag herself, and they laugh together.
By the end of the chapter, Bonnie feels that the whole experience is a dream and credits Felicity Woollaston for believing in her. Bonnie decides that, whether it seems cool or not, she will thank Felicity properly and even take her to lunch after the trip. Bonnie ends the chapter trusting the job completely and looking forward to the future it seems to promise.
