Chapter 19
Overview
Amy and Rosie secretly break into Sheriff Justin Scroggie’s suspiciously lavish house, hoping to find evidence about Andrew Fairbanks’s death without alerting the police. Instead, they discover Scroggie dead in his den, which cuts off a potential source of answers and suggests the conspiracy around Fairbanks and Amy is moving faster than they are. The chapter raises the stakes by implying corruption, cleanup, and a killer reaching key witnesses first.
Summary
Amy and Rosie hide outside Sheriff Justin Scroggie’s house for an hour, watching for signs that anyone is home. As they wait, Rosie remarks that the house looks too expensive for a small-town sheriff, which reinforces Amy’s suspicion that Scroggie is being paid by someone other than the police department. Amy decides that instead of confronting Scroggie directly, they should quietly search the house for anything connected to Andrew Fairbanks’s death.
Amy’s larger goal is to gather information without drawing attention, then get back to London and protect Jeff Nolan. Because Amy believes François Loubet may still want her killed after Kevin’s betrayal, she wants to stay low-profile. She reasons that if Scroggie was investigating Fairbanks’s death, he may have brought useful files or evidence home.
Once Amy is satisfied the house is empty, she and Rosie move to the back of the property. Rather than pick the lock, Amy smashes a rear window with a rock and climbs inside, and Rosie follows. They split up to search: Rosie looks downstairs while Amy checks upstairs for a phone or computer.
As Amy searches, she notes again how luxurious the house is, which deepens her suspicion that Scroggie has corrupt income. Before she finds anything herself, Rosie calls out that she has located a computer in a den off the hallway. Amy comes down, expecting a useful lead and hoping they can leave before Scroggie returns.
In the den, Rosie reveals that the computer is not the only thing she found: Sheriff Justin Scroggie is already dead. Amy sees his body hanging from a ceiling joist by his bound hands. The discovery means Amy and Rosie have arrived too late to question him, and it strongly suggests that someone else is eliminating people connected to the Fairbanks case before Amy can reach them.
