Chapter 64
Overview
Henk van Veen waits at Rockgrove Vineyard for Amy Wheeler, hiding in plain sight among tourists while carrying a gun. He reviews the known facts about Mark Gooch’s death and decides they only confirm existing suspicions, not the final answer. The chapter’s major turn is Henk’s belief that he possesses the missing key to the case: Jeff Nolan is behind everything, setting up a dangerous confrontation.
Summary
At Rockgrove Vineyard, Henk van Veen joins a tour group while he waits for Amy Wheeler to arrive. Henk believes that blending in is the best way to stay hidden, so he forces himself to drink Irish wine even though he would rather drink milk. During the tour, Henk notices the tree where Mark Gooch’s body was found and bluntly points it out, unsettling the other tourists and the guide.
Henk’s casual behavior masks the real danger: he is armed and monitoring updates on his phone. He knows Amy Wheeler should reach the vineyard within half an hour. Henk assumes Amy Wheeler and her companions will question the same vineyard staff he has already spoken to and will learn facts that confirm what they already know about Mark Gooch’s final movements.
Henk expects the investigation at the vineyard to reveal that Mark Gooch arrived in a taxi driven by a long-haired redheaded woman, that Mark Gooch carried a large leather holdall that later disappeared, and that an off-duty local police officer found the body at dusk. Henk believes those details alone will not solve the mystery. His plan is to confront Amy Wheeler at lunch with a gun and give her the crucial information he thinks will finally unlock the case: that Jeff Nolan is behind everything.
Before Amy Wheeler arrives, Henk walks over to inspect the tree more closely. He sees that the holes from Mark Gooch’s nailing have been filled with wood glue and painted over so carefully that the damage is almost invisible. Finding this detail notable, Henk loudly announces it to the rest of the tour group, again reinforcing both his odd manner and the tension of his waiting ambush.
