Addie spends the entire night awake, tormented by the image of Mrs. Bennett's body in the grave and the marks on her neck. When Addie's mother comes home in the early morning and quietly checks on her, Addie pretends to be asleep because she is afraid her mother will see that something is wrong.

Near lunchtime, Addie finally gets out of bed and checks her phone. She finds a message from Hudson asking if she is okay, but Addie cannot face him. Addie knows Hudson may connect her to Mrs. Bennett's disappearance once it becomes public, and in daylight Nathaniel's plan to hide the crime suddenly seems far less believable.

Addie then checks Snapflash, hoping Nathaniel has contacted her after abandoning her the night before. When she sends him a message asking what happened, she gets an error saying his account no longer exists. The discovery makes Addie feel sick, because Nathaniel has cut off their contact and appears to be erasing evidence of their affair.

Although Addie is shaken, she tries to convince herself that Nathaniel deleted the account to protect them both from being linked to Mrs. Bennett's death. Addie cannot bring herself to delete her own account because she still wants a way for Nathaniel to reach her. Alone in the kitchen while her mother sleeps after her night shift, Addie forces herself to make toast and clings to Nathaniel's instruction: deny everything.
