Addie narrates the immediate aftermath of striking Eve Bennett with a frying pan. The first blow drops Eve instantly, but Addie’s rage continues, and Addie hits Eve two more times until Eve lies motionless on the kitchen floor, bleeding from the head.

Once the anger passes, Addie realizes how serious the attack is. Addie insists she did not come intending to kill Eve and tells herself she only wanted Eve to stop talking about Nathaniel taking advantage of her. Addie also concludes that Eve would never allow her relationship with Nathaniel and sees Eve as the obstacle between them.

As Addie checks Eve’s body, Addie becomes terrified that Eve is no longer breathing. The possibility that she has killed her math teacher makes Addie think of a past incident involving her father, but this time Addie feels more exposed because she has no one with her to help and fears adult prison.

Desperate, Addie decides there is only one person who can help: Nathaniel Bennett. Because Addie does not have Nathaniel’s number and does not want any record on her own phone, Addie takes Eve’s phone from the counter, lifts Eve’s finger to unlock it, and finds Nathaniel listed among Eve’s favorite contacts.

When Nathaniel answers, he assumes Eve is calling and sounds angry. Addie tells him something happened and says she does not think Eve is breathing. After a shocked pause and Addie’s panicked insistence that it was not her fault, Nathaniel tells Addie he will come to the house right away.
