Chapter 25
Overview
At dinner with her mother, Addie fixates on Nate Bennett and reads the Bennetts' strained birthday meal as proof that Nate is unhappy with Eve. In a private hallway conversation, Nate sympathizes with Addie's bullying and gives her a special assignment to write a revenge letter to the person who hurt her. The exchange deepens Addie's attachment to Nate and intensifies her anger toward both Kenzie and Eve.
Summary
While eating dinner with her mother at Piazza, Addie can barely focus because Nate Bennett has arrived with Eve Bennett. Addie watches Nate constantly, notices the waitress flirting with him, and becomes convinced that Nate and Eve are having a miserable, nearly silent meal together. Because Eve had forced Addie to stay in wet clothes earlier while Nate had shown concern and sent her home, Addie sees the dinner as further proof that Eve does not appreciate Nate.
Wanting to stay near Nate longer, Addie pretends she needs the bathroom and waits in the hallway. Nate approaches her there, says he noticed her in the restaurant, and asks whether she is all right after the bad day she seemed to have at school. Addie admits that some kids threw her clothes in the shower, but she refuses to name Kenzie or anyone else because she fears making the bullying worse.
Instead of pushing for names, Nate offers Addie a different response. He tells her that while the rest of the class has a poem assignment, he wants Addie to write an angry revenge letter to the person who hurt her, describing what she would do if she had five minutes alone with that person and no one would ever know. The assignment excites Addie because it matches her hidden fury toward Kenzie, and it also makes the exchange feel private and special to her.
When Addie mentions Eve, Nate says it is Eve's birthday and gives a flat, unconvincing description of the evening as fine. Addie interprets his mood and the length of their hallway conversation as evidence that Nate is unhappy in his marriage. After Nate tells her he will see her in class and reminds her not to forget the letter, Addie leaves the encounter feeling even more attached to Nate and increasingly angry not only at Kenzie but also at Eve.
