Addie and Nate arrive at an abandoned pumpkin patch to bury Eve Bennett's body. Nate parks far away, makes Addie carry shovels, and carries Eve himself. As they reach the overgrown field, Addie is disgusted by the mud, rotting pumpkins, and blood on her shoes, and she wishes she had never come. Nate quickly chooses a spot and starts digging, then pressures Addie to help because he wants the grave finished before sunrise.

They dig for about ninety minutes in the cold until the hole is several feet long and about two feet deep. Once the work becomes easier, they both climb into the grave to continue. Nate then abruptly orders Addie to lie down in the hole so he can check whether it is large enough for Eve's body. Addie refuses, and Nate's anger makes him seem harsher and more frightening than she has seen before.

Because Nate's behavior alarms her, Addie again asks about the red marks she noticed on Eve's neck. Nate responds by framing the question as an accusation and chillingly suggests a scenario in which Eve revived, threatened him, and forced him to strangle her with his bare hands. Addie realizes that if Nate did kill Eve, then Addie is the only witness and would be easy to eliminate in this isolated place. When Addie begs him, Nate steps back from the moment, tells her she is being ridiculous, and insists that Addie killed Eve, not him.

Addie tries to accept Nate's version of events and even tells herself that, if he did strangle Eve, he must have done it to protect them. Nate finally drops the demand that she lie in the grave and says the hole is probably big enough. He then claims he forgot to bring Eve's purse and says it should be buried with the body so they can turn off her phone. Refusing to let Addie come with him, Nate leaves her alone in the grave to keep digging and gives her one final instruction: whatever happens, deny everything.
