Late that night, Detective Sprague calls Nate Bennett with an update on Eve Bennett’s disappearance. The police have not found Eve and have confirmed that Eve never took the commuter rail, which reassures Nate because those facts support his plan to make Adeline Severson look guilty. When Sprague says she has spoken to Addie and suspects Addie’s involvement, Nate encourages her and privately thinks that Addie’s past behavior at school, the letter he kept, and the fingerprints in Eve’s car will help frame Addie once Eve’s body is discovered.

After the call, Nate focuses on protecting himself. He reminds himself that Eve was the only person who knew about his affair with Addie, and he has already deleted the Snapflash account that connected them. Nate deliberately tries to charm Detective Sprague so she will trust him as a worried husband rather than see him as a suspect.

As Nate gets ready for bed, someone rings the doorbell close to eleven o’clock. He goes downstairs, expecting a person at the door, but finds only an Amazon box on the doorstep. Nate assumes it is an ordinary delivery, possibly the coffee maker he ordered, and brings it inside to open it.

Instead of a coffee maker, Nate finds a pair of Eve’s red high-heeled shoes. At first he thinks Eve must have ordered them before her death, but when he notices that the soles are still covered in dirt, he panics because the shoes seem to have come from the burial site. Nate rushes outside and calls for Addie and even whispers Eve’s name, but no one answers. Back inside, Nate rejects the idea of a ghost and realizes that some living person who knows enough to destroy him may be taunting him.
