Chapter 49
Overview
Eve secretly meets Jay after catching Nate kissing Addie and finally tells him exactly what happened. Jay urges her not to go through official school channels, because the scandal would become public, and instead advises her to confront Nate, stop the affair, and leave the marriage. The chapter marks a turning point as Eve accepts that staying with Nate is no longer possible, even though she is still afraid of him.
Summary
After school, Eve meets Jay secretly in a McDonald’s parking lot near the shoe store. She leaves her car, gets into Jay’s, and they drive away for privacy. Instead of feeling excited by the secrecy, Eve is overwhelmed by the memory of seeing Nate kiss Addie.
When Jay asks what happened, Eve breaks down crying before she can explain. Jay pulls over on a quiet street, comforts her, and waits until she can speak. Eve then tells Jay the full story, including what she saw between Nate and Addie in the classroom that day.
Jay is shocked and furious when Eve confirms that Nate really kissed Addie. Although Jay bitterly says maybe Eve should kill Nate, he quickly turns to practical advice when Eve asks what she should do. Jay warns that going to the principal would make the scandal public, and Eve agrees that formal reporting would not stay private.
Instead, Jay tells Eve that she must confront Nate, give him an ultimatum, and make sure the relationship with Addie ends immediately. Jay also tells Eve that she has to leave her marriage. Eve realizes he is right that she cannot stay with Nate, and for a moment she wonders whether she could have a future with Jay, even though she doubts it. By the end of the conversation, Eve accepts that leaving Nate is necessary, but she remains afraid because Jay does not fully understand how dangerous Nate feels to her.
