Immediately after discovering Nate and Addie together, Eve is overwhelmed with fury and briefly considers exposing them on the spot as students and teachers change classes. Eve stops herself because a public confrontation would not only destroy Nate, but also humiliate Eve and ruin Addie, whom Eve sees as a vulnerable sixteen-year-old who was failed by the adult teacher who should have set boundaries.

Instead of making a scene, Eve quietly takes a photograph as evidence. Eve knows Nate may avoid criminal charges because Addie is above the age of consent, but she also knows the affair would still end Nate’s teaching career and disgrace him publicly. As Eve walks back to her classroom, she realizes that her marriage and the life she has been living are effectively over.

When Eve reaches her classroom, she runs into Addie, who is forced to sit through Eve’s math class just after kissing Nate. Although the sight of Addie is painful, Eve keeps reminding herself that Nate exploited a child’s crush and vulnerability. Unable to teach normally, Eve assigns the class a large set of textbook problems so the students will stay occupied while she gathers herself.

Sitting behind her desk, Eve texts Jay and insists on seeing him that night. Because Jay is not closing the store, the two arrange to meet somewhere secluded instead. Eve decides Jay is the only person she can trust with the secret, and she resolves that, with his help or without it, she will not let Nate escape the consequences of what he has done.
