Chapter 30
Overview
Eve’s affair with Jay continues even as she admits, more honestly than before, that she cannot bear going home to Nate. The chapter deepens Eve’s emotional entrapment: she fantasizes about leaving her marriage, feels guilty about Jay’s family, yet still chooses to keep the affair going. Her final sense that someone may be watching adds tension and suggests their secret relationship may be growing more dangerous.
Summary
After another sexual encounter with Jay in the storeroom at Simon’s Shoes, Eve sits with him in the store while he helps her try on expensive shoes. The playful moment turns serious when Eve admits she does not want to go home to Nate. Thinking back to her recent hopes of repairing her marriage, Eve realizes those hopes are gone and that the distance between her and Nate keeps growing.
Jay asks why Eve does not simply leave Nate, and Eve answers with sarcasm about the fantasy of running away together. Even so, Eve privately admits she does imagine a future with Jay. Eve also knows that both of them are too tied to their current lives, and Eve cannot bring herself to humiliate Nate by leaving him for another man.
Eve reflects on Nate’s behavior that evening. Nate came home soaked, claimed he had walked in the rain for inspiration, and then shut himself away in his upstairs office, barely responding when Eve told him she was leaving. That coldness strengthens Eve’s belief that Nate no longer truly cares about her.
The mood shifts when Jay’s phone rings and a baby can be heard crying in the background. Hearing the baby intensifies Eve’s guilt, and Eve tells herself she needs to end the affair soon. Still, when Jay says the woman at home wants him back and asks about next week, Eve agrees to see him again, even while recognizing that each meeting could be their last.
Eve tenderly touches an old scar on Jay’s head, and the two carry shoe boxes back toward the storeroom. Their physical attraction immediately resurfaces, showing how difficult it is for Eve to stop. When they leave the store, Jay locks up and walks Eve to her car as usual, but Eve feels uneasy, as if someone is watching them. Jay kisses Eve one more time, then drives back to his family, while Eve returns to the husband she believes does not love her.
