Chapter 61
Overview
Abandoned at the burial site, Addie is forced to bury Eve Bennett alone and begins to realize Nathaniel may have deceived her. Finding Eve's purse in the grave and later discovering tire tracks confirms that Nathaniel left deliberately, shattering Addie's trust in him. Desperate and stranded, Addie turns to Hudson, reopening a damaged connection at a moment when she has no one else.
Summary
Left alone at the abandoned pumpkin patch for more than an hour, Addie realizes Nathaniel should have returned long ago if he had truly only gone back to the car. She calls for him repeatedly, but there is no answer. Afraid to leave the burial site and lose it in the dark, Addie decides she must finish the job herself.
Addie rolls Eve Bennett's body to the edge of the grave and drops it in. When Eve falls, Addie sees that Eve's purse is inside the sheet with the body, which shocks her because Nathaniel had said the purse was left in the trunk. The discovery makes Addie question whether Nathaniel was mistaken or whether he lied to her, deepening her fear and distrust.
Because she cannot risk leaving an open grave behind, Addie covers Eve's body with dirt and then piles leaves over the site until it is nearly invisible. Once the grave is hidden, Addie tries to retrace her way out of the woods. She wanders for a long time in the dark, calling for Nathaniel, until she finally finds tire tracks that prove he made it back to the car and drove away without her.
Addie follows the tracks back to the main road and regains phone service, but Nathaniel ignores her message asking where he is and pleading for help. With no safe explanation for her whereabouts and no one else she can trust, Addie calls Hudson despite their estrangement. After learning how far away she is, Hudson hesitates but ultimately agrees to come pick her up, giving Addie a way out after Nathaniel's betrayal.
