Addie bikes to Kenzie's large, dark house and compares it bitterly with her own home. She takes out the house keys she previously stole from Kenzie's bag and considers going inside, but the risk of alarms or a dog makes her stop. Instead of acting on her anger, Addie turns around and goes home.

At home, Addie finds her mother reading and is reminded of her parents' unhappy marriage. Addie's mother tells her they are supposed to visit Addie's father's grave and immediately criticizes Addie's dirty gym clothes. Addie, still humiliated from school, refuses to explain what happened and refuses to change.

The disagreement becomes a larger argument about Addie's father. Addie says she does not want to honor a man who was drunk, abusive, and unable to support the family. Addie recalls that her mother supported them while her father repeatedly lost jobs, and she remembers feeling no sadness when she learned he had died at the bottom of the stairs.

Addie's mother quietly insists that he was still Addie's father, but then unexpectedly gives up the cemetery visit. She asks Addie to change because she smells bad and suggests they go out to dinner instead. Addie agrees, ending the chapter with a small moment of relief and connection between mother and daughter.
