Sprague briefly notes that the shoes are unusually dirty for Eve, who normally kept her footwear immaculate. Nate struggles to answer calmly and becomes increasingly flustered, worried that his reaction will make him look guilty. After Sprague leaves, Nate rushes back to the kitchen to investigate.

Nate notices the back door is slightly open and sees a small bird pecking at the shoes. Once he chases the bird away, he looks closer and discovers a piece of smashed pumpkin stuck to one heel. That detail destroys any innocent explanation, because Eve was not wearing the shoes when she was buried, and the pumpkin connects the shoes directly to the pumpkin patch where Nate and Addie disposed of her body.

Nate concludes that someone deliberately planted the pumps in his kitchen to frighten him. He considers Addie as a possibility, since he abandoned her the night before, but doubts she would plan something this calculated; he also wonders if Eve had a lover who learned what happened and is now seeking revenge. Even so, Nate washes the shoes clean and reassures himself that whoever is taunting him has not gone to the police, which means he still believes he can avoid being exposed if he stays careful.
