Addie sits alone in the kitchen after eating an entire tub of rocky road ice cream, hoping it will dull her pain. Instead, the physical discomfort only adds to her misery, because Addie is consumed by the belief that she has lost Nathaniel forever.

As Addie spirals, she compares this heartbreak to her father’s death and reveals that she was responsible for killing him, although she insists it was an accident. Addie tells herself that his death ultimately improved her family’s life, and that thought leads her to a darker conclusion: if Eve Bennett were gone, everything between Addie and Nathaniel could be fixed.

Addie’s grief hardens into hatred for Eve. She blames Eve for destroying both her job and her relationship with Nathaniel, and briefly entertains the idea that Eve’s death would solve everything. Even so, Addie pulls back from the thought of directly harming Eve and repeats to herself that she could never do such a thing.

Trying to find another path, Addie decides she can still appeal to Eve. Remembering that Eve once helped her in math class and did not report her cheating, Addie chooses to believe Eve may still listen to reason, and she resolves to try because she sees it as her only hope.
