Eve returns to the house in a panic after seeing Addie outside and tells Nate that Addie was hiding in the bushes and watching her. Eve is certain of what she saw, but Nate stays in bed and questions whether it was really Addie. Eve argues that Addie hates her, points to Addie’s cheating and hostile behavior in class, and connects this incident to Addie previously being seen around Arthur Tuttle’s house.

As Eve’s fear grows, she decides the situation is serious enough to report to the principal. Nate resists that plan, calling it extreme and saying he does not want to cause more trouble for Addie because other students already ostracized her over the previous year’s events. Eve suggests that Addie may need counseling, but Nate reacts negatively to that idea as well.

Eve becomes frustrated that Nate keeps defending Addie instead of supporting her. She insists that she is going to Principal Higgins and treats the decision as final. Nate then changes tactics instead of continuing the argument.

He gets out of bed, sits beside Eve, and begins massaging her shoulders, saying she has seemed tense and implying that he may be partly responsible. Eve initially resists, but the massage relaxes her. Nate then brings up the baby talk from earlier in the evening and suggests they should do a better job of trying for a baby, and as he unzips Eve’s dress, it becomes clear that he is steering the moment toward sex rather than letting Eve continue with her plan to report Addie.
