After catching Nate with Addie and throwing Nate out, Eve spends the evening in a numb, surreal state. She tells herself she will file for divorce and is confident Nate will give her the house and everything else she demands. Instead of celebrating, Eve skips dinner, drinks, eats Neapolitan ice cream, and watches Netflix until she starts to sober up and drift to sleep on the sofa.

Eve is jolted awake by a loud crash that seems to come from the kitchen. At first, Eve wonders if she imagined it because she was half asleep and the television was on, but the fear leaves her shaken. The moment also makes Eve feel the absence of having someone else in the house, although she quickly reminds herself she does not need Nate and only wishes Jay were there because he would make her feel safe.

When Eve hears more noise, including clanging and footsteps, she realizes someone is definitely inside the house. She looks for her phone to call 911, but concludes she likely left it in the kitchen when she got the ice cream. Because Eve has no landline, she is forced to choose between fleeing without her phone or going toward the intruder, and she hesitates because she does not want to abandon her house and possessions.

As Eve stalls by the door with her purse, she fixates irrationally on the shoes she left upstairs, which underscores how panicked and unsettled she is. Then the situation shifts again when Eve hears a girl swear in the kitchen. That voice makes Eve think the intruder may not be a random burglar at all, but Addie.
