Addie eventually returns home after the rain soaks her jeans and one sneaker fills with water. Inside, Addie finds her mother on the sofa, waiting and immediately questioning where Addie has been.

Addie says she only went for a walk and denies going anywhere important. Although Detective Sprague has just stopped Addie on the street and given Addie a business card, Addie hides that encounter because Addie is already under suspicion and has decided to deny everything.

Addie’s mother, looking worn down and frightened, says the accusations are serious and begs Addie to tell her if Addie knows what happened to Eve Bennett. Addie feels a strong impulse to confess because Addie remembers when her mother used to make problems feel fixable, but Addie realizes this situation is beyond that and denies knowing anything.

As Addie’s mother insists that she cannot help without the truth, Addie starts to respond, unsure whether to keep lying or finally say more. Before Addie can answer, the doorbell rings.

Addie immediately fears Detective Sprague has come to arrest her, so Addie rushes to the door. Instead, when Addie opens it, she is stunned to find Kenzie Montgomery standing outside.
