Eve meets Jay at Simon's Shoes for their usual weekly affair and immediately reflects on how much more desired he makes her feel than Nate does. The sex is hurried and secretive in the store's cramped storeroom, but for Eve it is also the emotional high point of her week, something she depends on to endure her unhappy home life.

Afterward, Eve thinks back to how the relationship began about four months earlier. She had gone to the store convinced that the right pair of shoes might somehow make Nate want her again, but when she became overwhelmed and cried, Jay stayed after closing to comfort her. Their long conversation, his sympathy, and then his kiss turned Eve's desperation and loneliness into a full affair.

In the present, Jay gets a phone call from another woman and lies that he is still at work doing inventory. Eve hears him promise to come home, mention dinner, and say "Love you too," which reminds her that Jay is also unavailable and that their relationship can never become a real shared life.

The call breaks some of the mood, but Eve still agrees to see Jay again next week because these meetings have become everything to her. Even as she dresses and imagines how badly she wants to run away with him, Eve recognizes that the affair feels unsustainable and senses it will end horribly.
