Chapter 43
Overview
Eve’s miserable evening with Shelby highlights how unhappy and disconnected her marriage to Nate has become, especially around sex and the possibility of having children. The chapter then shifts from domestic frustration to real danger when Eve realizes someone is hiding outside her home. The final reveal that the intruder is Addie Severson raises the stakes by showing that Addie’s fixation on Eve has become personal and threatening.
Summary
Eve endures an unpleasant dinner with her old friend Shelby and Shelby’s husband, Justin. Shelby talks constantly about her child, and Justin’s obvious affection for Shelby makes Eve more aware of how physically distant Nate has become. Eve reflects bitterly on her stalled marriage, their lack of sex, and the fact that she is still not pregnant despite having stopped birth control.
After dinner, Eve walks Shelby out and is forced into an awkward conversation about fertility. Shelby cheerfully suggests that Eve see a doctor, which irritates Eve because she knows the real problem is that she and Nate barely have sex. Once Shelby leaves, Eve feels immediate relief and returns to ordinary chores, taking out the dinner trash and bringing the garbage bins to the curb for pickup.
Outside in the dark, Eve suddenly feels that someone is watching her. She hears a loud thump, scans the yard, and realizes something is moving in the bushes. Without her phone or any useful weapon, Eve quickly assesses her options and decides that running for the front door is safer than screaming and risking an immediate attack.
Eve sprints to the house in panic and briefly fears Nate has locked her out when the doorknob resists. The door opens, and as Eve rushes inside, she catches sight of a person darting across the lawn. In the moonlight, Eve recognizes the intruder as Addie Severson, revealing that Addie has followed the conflict with Eve beyond school and onto Eve’s property.
