Chapter 45
Overview
Addie realizes that sneaking to Nathaniel Bennett’s house repeats the same obsessive behavior that helped destroy Arthur Tuttle’s career. When Nathaniel warns her to deny everything, Addie lies to Principal Higgins and Eve about being outside the Bennetts’ home, and the confrontation ends without exposing the affair. The chapter shows how deeply Addie depends on Nathaniel and how narrowly his secret survives because Eve misreads Addie’s motives.
Summary
Addie regrets going to Nathaniel Bennett’s house the night before and connects it to the earlier incident outside Arthur Tuttle’s home. She recalls that when police found her near Arthur’s house, Principal Higgins questioned her in a way that helped turn suspicion onto Arthur, even though Arthur had only tried to support her. Addie feels guilty that Arthur lost his job because of a misunderstanding fueled by her troubled behavior.
Addie admits that going to Nathaniel’s house was not a one-time impulse. She has gone there before without his knowledge because she misses seeing him after school and is curious about his home life. Watching Nathaniel eat dinner with Eve and the Maddoxes hurts Addie, but she also notices that Nathaniel seems less affectionate with Eve than another husband is with his wife, which feeds Addie’s hopes about their secret relationship.
During second period, Nathaniel sends Addie a Snapflash message saying he knows she was at his house and that it was a big mistake. Addie apologizes and fears Nathaniel may end their relationship. When she checks her phone again, Nathaniel warns that the principal is going to question her, tells her to deny everything, and says that his entire life is in her hands. His message makes clear that exposure would destroy him and end their affair.
Almost immediately, Addie is called to Principal Higgins’s office, where Eve is already waiting. Principal Higgins asks whether Addie was in the bushes outside the Bennetts’ house, and Eve insists she saw her. Remembering Nathaniel’s instructions, Addie repeatedly denies it, claims she was home with her mother, and admits only to previously peeking at another student’s exam. Because Eve frames the issue as part of Addie’s hostility toward her rather than suspicion about Nathaniel, the meeting ends with a warning instead of deeper investigation. Addie leaves relieved that Nathaniel was not implicated and recognizes that Eve is right about one thing: Addie truly wishes Eve were out of her life.
