Chapter 34
Overview
Facing possible punishment for cheating, Addie escalates from resentment to direct intrusion by breaking into Kenzie Montgomery’s empty house with stolen keys. As she rummages through Kenzie’s room, her jealousy over Kenzie’s wealth, popularity, and relationship with Hudson shifts into a more revealing obsession with Nathaniel Bennett. The chapter marks another sharp moral descent for Addie and ends with sudden danger when she hears a crash downstairs.
Summary
While waiting to learn whether Principal Higgins will expel her for cheating, Addie decides to retaliate against Kenzie. Knowing Kenzie is at cheerleading practice and her parents will be out, Addie parks her bike away from the house, takes the keys she previously stole from Kenzie, and lets herself into the Montgomery home through the back door.
Inside, Addie checks for an alarm and is struck by how large, modern, and expensive the house is compared with her own older, worn-down home. She removes her dirty shoes to avoid staining the light carpet and climbs upstairs, thinking about how far she has already crossed the line. Addie justifies the break-in by blaming Kenzie for reporting the cheating and for tormenting her all semester.
Addie first looks through an upstairs bathroom, where she notices expensive products and finds a prescription for nausea that belongs to Kenzie’s older brother. She then identifies Kenzie’s bedroom and studies its luxury, sitting at Kenzie’s desk and opening drawers. There, Addie finds a love note from Hudson and reflects on how their childhood friendship changed in high school, how she began to want him differently, and how their bond ended because of what happened with her father and what she made Hudson do.
Driven by resentment, Addie smashes a ceramic bird Kenzie made in ceramics class, but the destruction does not make her feel better. Instead, Addie realizes that her feelings about Hudson have faded and that the person she now fixates on is Nathaniel Bennett. Humiliated by the thought of Nathaniel learning she cheated, Addie searches through Kenzie’s walk-in closet, envies her wealth and status, and starts rationalizing stealing clothes. At that moment, Addie hears a crash from downstairs, abruptly interrupting her trespassing.
