Eve reveals that Jay was the one who struck Nate with a rock and knocked him unconscious. Eve explains that she and Jay spent the previous two days tormenting Nate so he would believe Eve was alive and return to the burial site. Eve chose that plan because she wanted Nate in the same place where he had tried to kill her.

As Nate lies unconscious, Jay gives Eve duct tape, and Eve tightly binds Nate's wrists and ankles. When Nate begins to wake, Eve orders Jay to throw Nate into the grave. The freezing water jolts Nate fully awake, and Eve lets Nate realize that he is trapped in a muddy hole, restrained, and at her mercy.

Nate first apologizes and claims he came back because he regretted what he did, but Eve rejects that lie and says Nate returned only to confirm she was dead. Nate tries to manipulate Eve by insisting this is not who she is and offering to do anything she wants, including quitting teaching and leaving town. Eve refuses and tells Nate she does not intend to let him drown because she plans to bury him first.

Eve begins shoveling dirt onto Nate while Nate cycles through panic, declarations of love, threats, and desperate pleas. Jay briefly pulls Eve aside and warns that killing Nate will not solve her problems, but Eve says she has never been more certain. Jay then chooses to help her, and together they continue filling the grave.

Nate keeps begging and threatening until the mud covers his face and he finally falls silent. Eve and Jay finish filling the grave completely, killing Nate in the same manner he intended for Eve. As Eve completes the burial, she recites the poem Nate once wrote to her when she was fifteen and he was her young English teacher, underscoring how the relationship that began with grooming has ended in vengeance.
