Chapter 77
Overview
Nate defies Detective Sprague and returns to the pumpkin patch, desperate to confirm that Eve's body is still buried and that his growing fear of her "haunting" has a rational explanation. Instead, Nate finds the grave empty, a discovery that destroys his certainty about Eve's death and suggests someone else has intervened. Before Nate can react, an unseen attacker knocks him unconscious, pushing the story from cover-up into direct retaliation and deeper mystery.
Summary
Nate speeds through the rain even though Detective Sprague told him to stay home, because he believes going to the police station could mean arrest. After the jack-o'-lantern and raven in his kitchen convince him that Eve may be haunting him, Nate stops driving aimlessly and decides to return to the pumpkin patch. Nate wants proof that Eve is really dead and still buried where he and Addie left her.
During the drive, Nate ignores repeated phone calls that he assumes are from Detective Sprague. The bad weather and muddy road slow him down, and when his car can go no farther, Nate continues on foot in boots and a raincoat. As Nate makes his way toward the patch, Nate blames himself for leaving Addie alone to finish the burial and tries to reassure himself that Eve was dead when he last saw her.
Once Nate reaches the pumpkin patch, Nate heads straight for the spot near the old chicken coop where Eve was buried. Nate expects to find the mound of dirt or Eve's body still in the grave. Instead, Nate finds a large open hole with nothing inside: no sheet, no corpse, and no sign that Eve remains buried there.
The empty grave shatters Nate's confidence in what happened two nights earlier. Nate drops to his knees in the mud, whispers Eve's name, and is left with the horrifying implication that either someone removed the body or Eve was never truly gone. Before Nate can process it, someone strikes Nate in the back of the head, and he loses consciousness.
