Chapter 59
Overview
Nate transports Eve’s body while coldly justifying her murder and taking control of the cover-up. He uses Eve’s phone and car to stage a false disappearance, with Addie unknowingly helping him and still believing she killed Eve. By choosing a remote burial site, Nate moves from impulsive violence to deliberate concealment, tightening his hold over Addie and the crime.
Summary
Nate reflects that he has never killed anyone before, but he does not view himself as suicidal or inherently murderous. He thinks about death as an abyss he fears, and he remembers seeing that same terror in Eve’s eyes while he strangled her. Nate blames Eve for what happened because he believes she threatened his livelihood.
Nate drives with Eve’s body wrapped in a navy sheet in the trunk of his car. He takes grim satisfaction in details of her death and disposal, including the fact that she is barefoot. Nate notes that he and Addie cleaned Eve’s blood from the kitchen floor before leaving, and he recognizes that Addie was especially anxious about removing all evidence.
As part of their cover story, Nate uses Eve’s phone to buy an Amtrak ticket from Boston to New York late that night. He has Addie, who only has a permit, drive Eve’s Kia behind him to a commuter rail station so it will look as though Eve left on her own. Nate admits to himself that the plan may not survive close scrutiny, but he believes it may delay suspicion.
At the nearly empty station, Addie parks Eve’s car while Nate avoids the lot because he is worried about cameras. When Addie gets back into Nate’s car, Nate briefly considers abandoning her there, but decides he still needs her. He also reflects that Addie still believes she killed Eve, and he sees her as gullible enough to accept whatever he tells her.
Addie nervously reports that she parked the car, and Nate tells her the next step is getting rid of Eve’s body. When Addie reacts with alarm, Nate reframes it as burying Eve "like a funeral of sorts," and Addie reluctantly agrees. Nate heads toward a deserted road near an overgrown pumpkin patch from his childhood, deciding that this isolated place will be Eve’s burial site.
