After Jay returns Eve Bennett to her car, Eve drives around, goes home, fails to focus on grading, and drinks heavily. By the time Nate Bennett arrives nearly three hours after school, Eve is drunk, angry, and determined to end the situation. While trying on shoes to calm herself, Eve decides she will confront Nate as soon as he walks in.

When Nate comes home and asks about dinner, Eve tells him she knows about him and Addie Severson. Nate first tries to dismiss the accusation as absurd and blames Eve’s drinking, but when Eve says she saw them kissing in his classroom, he changes tactics. Nate admits only that Addie kissed him and that he let it continue too long, trying to minimize his responsibility and present the incident as a single mistake.

Eve refuses Nate’s version of events and makes clear she is considering reporting him. Nate immediately asks whether Eve has told Principal Higgins or anyone else, showing that his first concern is controlling the fallout. Eve then states her terms: she wants a divorce, she wants the house, and Nate must end his relationship with Addie immediately.

Eve adds one final demand that matters most to her: Nate must resign from Caseham High and never teach children again. Nate resists this, arguing that teaching is his livelihood, and then attacks Eve’s credibility by calling her unstable, pointing to her drinking and her hidden collection of shoes. Eve ends the standoff by revealing that she took a photograph of Nate kissing Addie, which destroys his ability to deny what happened.

Once Nate realizes Eve has proof, he gives in and agrees to resign. He goes upstairs, starts packing a duffel bag, and bitterly insists he was still a good husband because he never lost his temper, tolerated Eve’s habits, and came home every night.
