Addie waits in Eve Bennett’s kitchen after striking Eve with a frying pan, staring at Eve’s motionless feet and fearing she has killed her. Addie compares this attack to what happened with her father and realizes this time was not an accident, which makes her panic about prison and the seriousness of what she has done.

Nathaniel arrives less than twenty minutes after Addie summons him. Addie admits that she hit Eve because Eve threatened to tell the principal about the affair. Nathaniel kneels beside Eve, checks for signs of breathing, and says he cannot feel Eve’s chest moving, confirming for Addie that Eve is likely dead.

Instead of reacting with grief, Nathaniel immediately focuses on evidence. He takes Eve’s unlocked phone from Addie, searches it for the photos Eve claimed to have, and deletes the incriminating images. Nathaniel then outlines a cover-up: he will use Eve’s phone to buy a train ticket to New York, claim Eve planned to visit family in New Jersey, drive Eve’s car to a commuter rail station, and make it look as if she left voluntarily.

When Addie hesitates at the idea of burying Eve’s body, Nathaniel pressures her by contrasting the plan with the likely prison sentence she would face if the police learned the truth. He orders Addie to go upstairs and get a clean sheet from the linen closet so they can wrap Eve’s body. Horrified but persuaded that Nathaniel is saving her and preserving their future together, Addie decides to do exactly what he says.
