Addie waits with Kenzie in a small interview room at the police station and becomes increasingly frightened. She worries that coming without telling her mother or getting a lawyer may have been a mistake, especially because she knows her own role is serious: she helped Nathaniel Bennett bury Eve Bennett’s body and is not even sure who actually killed Eve.

As they wait for Detective Sprague, Addie studies Kenzie and feels uncertain about trusting someone who had tormented her for months. But seeing Kenzie’s nerves up close changes Addie’s perspective. Kenzie, who had seemed worldly and confident, now looks like a traumatized child, which forces Addie to fully confront that Nathaniel began abusing Kenzie when she was only fourteen.

When Detective Sprague enters, she recognizes both girls and quickly understands they have come to speak about Nathaniel. Kenzie tries to begin but becomes overwhelmed and cannot get the words out. Sprague gently guides her, asking whether this is about Kenzie’s relationship with Nathaniel, and Kenzie can only nod through tears.

Kenzie’s visible distress pushes Addie to act. Realizing how badly Nathaniel exploited both of them, Addie decides they are the only people who can make sure he faces consequences. She blurts out that she and Nathaniel have been sleeping together all year and that Nathaniel ordered her to keep it secret.

Sprague reacts with open anger toward Nathaniel, confirming to Addie that the detective truly wants to help. Addie takes Kenzie’s hand, commits to telling the truth, and stops protecting Nathaniel. When Sprague asks what happened to Eve Bennett, Addie finally tells her everything.
