Eve reveals that Nate did not successfully kill her when he strangled her. In a flashback to two nights earlier, she regains consciousness in darkness, wrapped tightly in a sheet, with dirt falling on her and a shovel scraping nearby. Realizing Nate and Addie are trying to bury her alive, Eve stays silent because she believes making any sound will only give them another chance to finish killing her.

While Eve lies still, a young female voice calls out for Nathaniel, and the digging stops. Leaves are scattered over Eve instead of more heavy dirt, and the footsteps eventually fade. Because the grave is shallow and the sheet keeps dirt away from her mouth, Eve concludes that suffocation is not the immediate danger; discovery is.

After waiting what she thinks is about an hour, Eve tries to free herself. Her first attempt fails and triggers panic, but she forces herself to focus on the fact that her hands are not bound. Motivated by the need to survive and make Nate pay, she works a corner of the sheet loose, reaches the dirt, and spends another long stretch clawing her way upward.

Eve finally breaks through the surface and gulps fresh air. She sees that she has been left in a pumpkin patch and then discovers that her purse was buried with her. Inside it, she finds her phone, still able to power on, though it has no service yet. Eve decides to keep moving until she can get home, determined to survive and hold Nate accountable for trying to murder her.
