Chapter 74
Overview
Kenzie shatters Addie’s image of Nate by revealing that he had a sexual relationship with her starting when she was fourteen and used the same romantic lines on both of them. Her screenshots give Addie the proof she lacks and recast Nate as a manipulative predator rather than a trustworthy partner. By the end of the chapter, Addie agrees to go with Kenzie to the police, marking a major turn against Nate.
Summary
Addie is stunned when Kenzie says the poem Nate gave Addie was originally written for Kenzie two years earlier. Kenzie then reveals that she and Nate have been sleeping together since her freshman year, after he comforted her while her brother was being treated for leukemia and she felt ignored at home. Addie immediately struggles to reconcile Kenzie’s story with the man Nate claimed to be.
Kenzie explains that Nate made her feel special, called her his soulmate, and drew her into a long secret relationship. When the earlier scandal involving Addie and Mr. Tuttle brought scrutiny to Nate, Nate told Kenzie they had to stop seeing each other. Kenzie says that is why she resented Addie so intensely this year: she blamed Addie for Nate pulling away from her.
When Addie asks about Hudson, Kenzie says Hudson is only a friend who has supported her while she was struggling, not a boyfriend. Kenzie says seeing Nate’s poem in Addie’s notebook made her realize Nate had been repeating the same declarations to both of them. That realization made her understand that Nate had been manipulating her rather than loving her.
Kenzie says she plans to go to the police and tell them everything about Nate, especially since she does not know what happened to Mrs. Bennett. She asks Addie to come with her. Addie hesitates because Kenzie has bullied her for months, and because Addie has no proof left after Nate’s Snapflash messages disappeared.
Kenzie then reveals that she took screenshots of Nate’s messages. She shows Addie proof, including Nate telling Kenzie, “You’re my soulmate,” the exact line he used on Addie. Faced with undeniable evidence and Kenzie’s plea not to face the police alone, Addie takes out Detective Sprague’s card and finally agrees to go with Kenzie.
