Chapter 35

Overview

Addie’s break-in at Kenzie’s house turns from petty revenge into a moment of real fear when she hears a crash and believes she has been caught. The scare forces Addie to confront how serious her impulsive choices have become. When she learns the noise came only from the family cat, she escapes unnoticed, shaken and newly aware of her own limits.

Summary

In Kenzie Montgomery’s house, Addie Severson hears a noise downstairs and immediately realizes how serious her situation is. What began as a revenge fantasy now feels like a real crime to Addie, and she panics over the possibility of being caught for breaking and entering and facing major consequences.

Addie considers hiding in Kenzie’s large closet, but she rejects that plan because being discovered there would be even more humiliating and suspicious. Instead, Addie throws the stolen keys into the closet, decides she has to leave, and carefully starts down the stairs toward the back door while listening for any sign that Kenzie or one of her family members has come home.

When Addie reaches the kitchen, she discovers that the loud crash was not caused by a person at all but by Kenzie’s white cat, which has knocked a pitcher of water onto the floor. Relieved that no one is actually home, Addie quickly grabs her sneakers, slips out the back door, and leaves quietly. By abandoning the keys in Kenzie’s closet, Addie also removes any immediate chance of returning.
