While sitting in Nate Bennett’s English class, Addie is interrupted when another student delivers a note addressed to her. Nate reads it first, then gives it to Addie after class. The note says Eve Bennett wants to see her immediately after her last period, and Addie instantly suspects Kenzie has reported her for cheating on the math midterm.

Nate notices Addie’s distress and gently asks what the note is about. Addie lies that she does not know, partly because she is ashamed and partly because she does not trust that anything she says about Eve would stay private from Nate. Even though Nate offers help, Addie keeps the problem to herself and goes to Eve’s classroom anxious about what is coming.

When Addie arrives, Eve is grading exams and formally tells her to sit down. Eve asks if there is anything Addie wants to confess, but Addie stays silent. Eve then puts Addie’s test and Kyle’s test in front of her and directly accuses Addie of copying Kyle’s answers while sitting behind him.

Addie cannot deny it and finally apologizes. Eve remains cold and says cheating is an extremely serious matter. She tells Addie that the next morning she will discuss the incident with Principal Higgins, making clear that the accusation will become an official disciplinary issue.

After leaving the classroom, Addie spirals over what will happen next. She fears Principal Higgins already sees her as a troublemaker, dreads that her mother may be called in, and is especially upset that Nate will learn she cheated. Addie blames Kenzie for exposing her and ends the chapter angry and resolved not to be a doormat anymore.
