Chapter 79
Overview
After escaping the grave, Eve chooses not to call the police because she believes Nate would evade real punishment. Instead, she turns to Jay, who rescues her, helps her hide, and commits himself to her plan. The chapter shifts Eve from victim and survivor into someone preparing to strike back on her own terms.
Summary
Eve makes her way barefoot through the cold after escaping the shallow grave where Nate buried her. Branches cut her feet, and she wraps herself in the sheet she brought to keep warm until she reaches a small road and finds that her phone has one bar of service.
Eve starts to call 911, but stops because she does not trust the legal system to punish Nate in a lasting way. Believing that Nate could talk his way out of serious consequences, Eve decides she needs a different plan and sends a Snapflash message to Jay, the one person she thinks might help her in the middle of the night.
After a tense wait, Jay calls, learns where Eve is, and comes to pick her up. Eve breaks down when she gets into his car, and Jay does not pressure her for an explanation. Instead of taking her home, Jay drives to Simon's Shoes, unlocks the store, gives Eve his coat, and tells her to take whatever shoes she needs.
Once Eve has warm boots, she finally tells Jay that Nate tried to kill her and bury her alive, though she deliberately leaves out Addie's involvement. Jay wants to call the police immediately, but Eve refuses because she wants Nate to truly pay for what he has done. When Eve asks for a place to hide for a few days and for more help, Jay offers the unused tool shed and agrees without hesitation to do whatever she wants.
