Addie struggles through gym class, where she is forced to keep running laps even though Kenzie appears to get away with doing fewer. After class, Addie is relieved to shower, but she is already dreading the rest of the day, including a cemetery visit with her mother and Mrs. Bennett’s math class.

When Addie returns to her locker, she discovers that her jeans and sweatshirt are missing. She quickly realizes Kenzie and her friends are responsible when they watch her and mock her instead of helping. Addie briefly wants to attack Kenzie, but she stops herself because she thinks Mr. Bennett would be disappointed in her.

Addie searches the locker room and eventually finds her clothes stuffed in the shower, completely soaked. With the next class of students arriving, Addie has no practical choice except to put her sweaty gym clothes back on and carry her wet clothes in her backpack.

Addie arrives late to Mrs. Bennett’s math class embarrassed and uncomfortable. Mrs. Bennett immediately calls attention to her lateness and demands her homework. Because Addie packed her soaked clothes in the same bag, the assignment is ruined and unreadable. Mrs. Bennett throws it away and orders Addie to redo it for the next day, leaving Addie overwhelmed and further convinced that Mrs. Bennett is cruel and unhappy.
