Chapter 47
Overview
Eve begins the chapter convinced Addie is stalking her, but a conversation with Shelby makes her consider that Addie may actually be obsessed with Nate. Acting on that fear, Eve goes to warn him and instead catches Nate and Addie alone together. Seeing Nate kiss Addie shatters Eve’s assumptions and reveals that Nate has been protecting Addie because he is having an affair with her.
Summary
Eve leaves her meeting with Debra Higgins feeling angry and unheard. Eve is certain Addie was outside her house in the bushes the night before, and Addie’s denial only convinces Eve further that Addie is lying. Debra agrees Addie may be dishonest, but because there is no proof, Debra cannot act. Eve texts Nate about the denial, but his dismissive reply—suggesting it might not have been Addie—frustrates her even more.
At lunch in the teachers’ dining area, Eve vents to Shelby about Addie’s hatred and what Eve sees as stalking behavior. Shelby is skeptical that Addie would target Eve so intensely over classroom conflicts. Shelby instead suggests that Addie might be fixated on Nate, since students commonly have crushes on him and Addie joined his poetry magazine. That idea suddenly reframes everything for Eve.
Eve concludes that Addie may be doing to Nate what she previously did to Arthur Tuttle. Because Eve believes Nate is in danger of being drawn into the same kind of scandal that ruined Art, she rushes to warn him before his next class. When Eve reaches Nate’s classroom during fifth period, she sees through the door window that Nate is inside with Addie, who appears to be crying. Eve stays hidden and watches.
At first, Eve tries to explain away what she sees as inappropriate but possibly innocent comfort when Nate takes Addie’s hand. Then Nate kisses Addie, and the intensity of the kiss makes clear this is not a first or accidental moment. In that instant, Eve understands Addie’s hostility toward her, Addie’s presence near the house, Nate’s repeated defense of Addie, and Nate’s lack of interest in Eve except when he wanted something involving Addie. Eve realizes her husband has been having an affair with his student.
