Epilogue
Overview
Six months after the Bennett scandal, Addie is healing: she has rebuilt her friendship with Kenzie, started therapy, and found steadier happiness with Hudson. The chapter confirms that Nathaniel escaped legal consequences after Eve resurfaced and blocked the case, while Eve resigned and vanished from town. A final, quiet clue suggests Hudson remains in touch with Eve, linking the buried crime to the characters’ new lives even as Addie moves toward a more hopeful future.
Summary
Six months later, Addie arrives at the school parking lot and meets Hudson, who has become a star quarterback and remains kind and attentive to her. Addie reflects that she is much happier than before, largely because she and Kenzie rebuilt their friendship. Although Addie is still not popular, she no longer cares, because her life feels brighter and more stable.
Addie then reviews the aftermath of the Bennett scandal. After Addie and Kenzie spoke to Detective Sprague, police tried to bring in Nathaniel Bennett, but he disappeared before they could act. Eve Bennett then reappeared with a false story that she had voluntarily left town for a few days; because Eve refused to confirm Addie’s account and was obviously alive, the police could not pursue Addie’s confession about helping Nathaniel bury her.
Addie notes that Eve resigned from Caseham High and left town after the scandal, while Mr. Tuttle found another teaching job elsewhere. It also came out that Nathaniel had targeted more students than just Addie and Kenzie, which deepens Addie’s shame and disgust. However, Addie and Kenzie have become genuine friends, and both are in therapy, which helps them process what Nathaniel did.
Addie and Hudson leave for milkshakes, and one of his football friends calls him “Jay,” which Hudson explains is a shortened form of his last name. Addie quietly wonders whether their closeness means they are becoming a couple. At the diner parking lot, Hudson receives a text from an old female friend who used to like shoes and had once attended their school; he says she had been in a bad place but is doing much better now and deserves happiness. The moment suggests Hudson is still connected to the hidden past, but he chooses the present by taking Addie’s hand and walking with her into the diner.
