Eve realizes the person in her kitchen is Addie Severson and decides not to call the police. Instead, Eve feels guilty about how little help she gave Addie during the semester and blames Nate for exploiting a vulnerable sixteen-year-old student. Wanting to correct that failure, Eve goes to the kitchen intending to talk to Addie calmly.

In the kitchen, Eve finds Addie by the mess from a fallen frying pan. When Eve says she knows about Addie and Nate, Addie immediately insists that she and Nate are in love. Eve tries to explain that the relationship is inappropriate because Nate is much older and Addie is both a minor and his student.

Addie rejects everything Eve says. She argues that Eve does not understand the bond she shares with Nate and claims Eve is cruelly keeping them apart. The more Eve frames Nate as manipulative and predatory, the more defensive and enraged Addie becomes.

Realizing Addie will not listen, Eve decides the situation must be reported. Eve tells Addie that they need to speak to Principal Higgins on Monday, because Addie needs help and the affair cannot continue in secret. That decision raises the stakes immediately, since Addie sees exposure as a direct threat to her relationship with Nate.

Addie panics and screams when Eve says she will tell the principal. As Eve tries to move toward her, Addie grabs the frying pan from the counter and swings it into Eve’s head with full force. Eve is knocked unconscious, and the chapter ends as everything goes black.
