Chapter 20
Overview
Millie comes face-to-face with Wendy and realizes Wendy has been violently and repeatedly injured, despite Wendy’s attempt to explain it away as a fall and medication-related bruising. When Millie pushes for medical help and reporting, Wendy panics and warns Millie to walk away for her own safety. Wendy shuts Millie out, but Millie is left determined not to ignore what’s happening.
Summary
Millie finally sees Wendy Garrick face-to-face and is shocked by the extent of her injuries. Wendy’s face is heavily bruised, with marks in different stages of healing, suggesting repeated beatings rather than a single incident.
Wendy insists she is “fine” and claims the bleeding and bruising are from a fall, blood thinners, and medication side effects. Millie does not believe the explanation, especially after seeing blood on Wendy’s nightgown.
Millie urges Wendy to go to a hospital to check for broken bones and to report what happened. Wendy reacts with fear and urgency, warning Millie that she has no idea what she is dealing with and must not get involved.
Wendy demands that Millie close the door and leave her alone, then abruptly slams the door in Millie’s face. Millie understands Wendy’s message to stay out of it, but admits she has never been good at minding her own business.
