Chapter 24
Overview
Millie schedules dinner with Brock for the next night, but Brock warns her they need a serious conversation about their relationship. Millie dreads the talk because it will force her to reveal her past and decide whether to be honest or keep hiding. Back at the Garricks’ penthouse, the situation shifts when Wendy unexpectedly comes out of the bedroom and demands to speak with Millie.
Summary
On her way back to the Garricks’ building, Millie is nearly hit by a reckless biker while crossing the street, which heightens her already anxious mood.
Millie receives a call from Brock, who invites her to dinner. Millie deflects by saying she will likely be at the Garricks’ late, then suggests dinner the next night because Douglas will be away and she will not need to cook.
Brock agrees but says they need to “have a talk” about where he stands with Millie. Millie realizes Brock is right and thinks about finally confessing her past, including prison time, but she cannot bring herself to tell him over the phone and decides it will have to wait until tomorrow.
At the building, Millie notices the doorman holding the door and winking at her, which unsettles her but feels minor compared to everything else. When Millie reaches the twentieth floor penthouse, she is shocked to find Wendy outside the bedroom, standing directly in front of the elevator doors, and Wendy tells Millie they need to talk.
