Chapter 50
Overview
Over lunch, Wendy’s friend Audrey reveals gossip that Millie has a reputation for rescuing women from abusive husbands, including arranging lawyers, disappearances, and even killing abusers. The rumors frame Millie as both resourceful and dangerous, unsettling Wendy as she reflects on her own marriage. Audrey then presses Wendy about her failure to get pregnant, pushing a fertility specialist’s name into Wendy’s hands.
Summary
Wendy meets her friend Audrey for lunch at an expensive restaurant and savors the freedom and luxury of her current life, even as she privately resents how draining Douglas can be. Wendy compares Audrey’s wealthy lifestyle to her own and notes that Douglas’s money affords them far more.
Audrey shares gossip about Ginger Howell’s divorce and reveals that Ginger got help from a woman named Millie. Wendy, unfamiliar with the name, learns Millie is a cleaning woman with a reputation for helping wives with “husband problems.” Wendy initially thinks of Douglas’s irritations and failures to improve, but Audrey clarifies she means serious abuse.
Audrey explains that Ginger’s husband, Carter, was physically abusive and that Millie helped Ginger with practical steps: what to say and do, resources, and a strong lawyer. Audrey then escalates the rumors, claiming Millie has helped some women disappear and, in extreme cases, has even killed abusive men to stop them.
Audrey adds that Millie once went to prison for beating a man who tried to rape Millie’s friend and killing him. Wendy reacts with shock and unease at the idea of Millie being “dangerous.”
As the lunch continues, Audrey notices Wendy still isn’t eating and pivots to Wendy’s fertility struggles, bluntly reminding her she’s “not getting any younger.” Wendy reluctantly accepts the contact information for a fertility specialist, saving the number mainly to appear proactive if Douglas asks.
