Chapter 34
Overview
Millie races back to the dark penthouse expecting danger and briefly believes Wendy has been killed, only to discover the “blood” is spilled wine. Wendy is alive but newly beaten, with a fresh facial bruise and broken ribs, and reveals Douglas tracked her immediately to Fiona’s farm. Wendy begins to give up on escaping, but Millie recommits to helping her and stopping Douglas.
Summary
Millie rides the creaking elevator up to the Garricks’ twentieth-floor penthouse, checking the time since Wendy’s call and growing more afraid when Wendy stops answering. When the doors open, the apartment is dark, and Millie worries Douglas may be inside waiting to trap her.
Keeping mace ready and her phone within reach, Millie enters the living room and spots what looks like blood on the carpet and a body sprawled on the sectional. Believing Wendy has been murdered, Millie rushes to her—only for Wendy to open her eyes. The “blood” is spilled red wine.
Relief turns to alarm when Millie sees a fresh bruise on Wendy’s cheek and Wendy admits Douglas “definitely broke” her ribs. Millie urges a hospital visit, but Wendy refuses and asks only for an ice pack, which Millie retrieves and brings to her.
Wendy explains that Douglas was waiting at Fiona’s farm in Potsdam and somehow already knew where she was. When Wendy asks if Millie told anyone, Millie insists she didn’t, privately remembering she told Enzo and believing he would never betray Wendy. Defeated, Wendy talks about accepting that she can’t escape, but Millie refuses to let it stand and promises she will help Wendy and stop Douglas Garrick from hurting her.
