Chapter 55
Overview
After Wendy’s credit cards are canceled, she confronts Douglas at the Long Island house and learns he did it to force a meeting—and that he knows about her affair with Russell. When Douglas proposes counseling and talks about having children, Wendy admits she is infertile, doesn’t want children, and wants a divorce.
Douglas then reveals the prenup contains an infidelity clause and claims he already has camera evidence that would leave Wendy with nothing, while he cuts off her access to money. Cornered, Wendy shifts from planning a divorce payout to considering murder as the only way to inherit.
Summary
Wendy repeatedly calls and texts Douglas with no response, then discovers all her credit cards have been canceled after they are declined again at another store. Alarmed and angry, Wendy drives to the Long Island house Douglas prefers, finding it empty but noticeably redecorated in Douglas’s taste. She waits until late evening for him to return.
When Douglas arrives, disheveled and exhausted, Wendy confronts him about canceling her cards. Douglas admits he did it to force her to come see him and bluntly reveals he knows about Wendy’s involvement with Russell, including paying for a hotel room. He also brings up that Russell is Marybeth’s husband and implies Wendy’s betrayal is especially cruel.
Douglas’s anger softens into an attempt to save the marriage: he proposes marriage counseling and says he still wants Wendy to be the mother of his children. Wendy decides to “rip off the Band-Aid” and confesses she cannot have children due to past damage to her fallopian tubes, and then admits she doesn’t want children at all. Wendy tells Douglas she wants out of the marriage and no longer loves him.
Douglas agrees to divorce but vows Wendy will get none of his money. Wendy cites the prenup’s promised ten million dollars, but Douglas reveals a hidden infidelity clause that voids her payout if he has evidence of cheating. Douglas admits the prenup’s setup was his plan and claims he already has photos and videos—obtained via hidden cameras in their apartment.
Wendy refuses to sign divorce papers to prevent Douglas from using the infidelity clause, but Douglas responds by cutting off her access to money and credit, and says she can stay in the penthouse only temporarily before he sells it. Left trapped and furious, Wendy realizes she would inherit everything if Douglas were dead, and she begins seriously entertaining the idea of killing him.
