Chapter 35
Overview
Wendy shows Millie a gun Douglas has hidden inside a hollowed-out dictionary and frames it as an escape from his abuse. Millie refuses to let Wendy resort to shooting Douglas, hides the weapon again when Douglas returns, and narrowly avoids suspicion. Douglas’s strict orders limiting Wendy’s food reveal he is also systematically starving her, hardening Millie’s resolve to end the situation.
Summary
Millie Calloway remains employed by the Garricks, having lied to Brock about why she stayed and turned down an interview at his firm. Millie avoids Brock because Millie knows she must finally confess Millie’s past before Brock introduces Millie to his parents, but Millie cannot find the courage or a “good time” to do it.
While Millie prepares dinner to Douglas Garrick’s exact preferences, Wendy Garrick appears, looking somewhat healed, and asks Millie to talk privately. Wendy leads Millie upstairs to Douglas’s bookcase and reveals a hollowed-out dictionary hiding a gun, which Wendy believes is her way out.
Wendy insists the gun is loaded and implies using it on Douglas, but Millie panics and argues Wendy will only trade one prison for another. Millie takes the gun from Wendy, questions whether Wendy even knows how to use it, and reluctantly admits Millie has some experience from going to a firing range with Enzo. Wendy presses Millie, but Millie refuses to help Wendy commit violence and puts the gun back into the fake dictionary.
The elevator opens and Douglas arrives, forcing Millie to hurriedly return the dictionary to the shelf while Wendy rushes back to the guest bedroom. Douglas questions why Millie is upstairs and then dictates Wendy’s dinner portion, ordering no potatoes and only half a serving of chicken.
As Millie cooks, Millie realizes Douglas is controlling Wendy’s intake so severely that he is effectively starving Wendy, explaining Wendy’s extreme thinness and adding another layer to Douglas’s abuse. Millie concludes Wendy is right that this must end, and with Wendy barred from the potatoes, Millie spitefully spits in Douglas’s potato purée.
