Chapter 7
Overview
Millie cooks an exacting, upscale dinner for the Garricks and prepares two place settings, expecting Wendy to appear. Douglas arrives, calls for Wendy, and confirms she will not come down, insisting he will personally bring her food upstairs. His sharp reaction to Millie’s repeated offer highlights the secrecy around Wendy and deepens Millie’s anxiety about the apartment.
Summary
Millie starts preparing dinner in the Garricks’ kitchen and finds a detailed weekly menu on the refrigerator with exact instructions for specialty ingredients and multiple store stops. The picky, high-end directions make Millie less enthusiastic, but Millie chooses the recipe for the day: Cornish game hen.
After finishing laundry and tidying upstairs, Millie roasts the Cornish game hen and sets two place settings for the strict 7 p.m. dinner time. While checking the oven, Millie hears the elevator and Douglas Garrick’s voice calling for Wendy as he arrives home.
Millie greets Douglas and offers dinner, then watches the stairwell, hoping Wendy will come out. Douglas studies the stairs and the two settings and says he doubts Wendy will join them. When Millie offers to bring Wendy a plate, Douglas insists he will take it himself, blaming Wendy’s continued illness.
Millie plates the meal and asks how Wendy is doing. Douglas says it is “not a good day,” thanks Millie for her help, and reacts tensely when Millie again offers to bring Wendy’s food upstairs, making Millie stop pushing.
Millie says good night, leaves for the elevator, and feels relief when she gets out. The interaction reinforces Millie’s growing unease about the apartment and whatever is happening upstairs with Wendy.
